What Is the Most Cost-Effective Way to Improve an Uneven Garage Floor?

Your garage floor doesn’t have to be torn out to look bad. You may have one small spot that your tire always rolls into. There could be a small high spot that you brush your broom against every time you clean. Your floor could just be rough but still allow you to park in your garage.

It all depends on where. The problem is occurring on your floor. If your concrete is good and you only have a small section that isn’t level it’s usually cheaper to fix that area. Custom Concrete Prep & Polish can grind your floor where it’s high and add material to your floor where it’s needed.

Know What You Are Trying To Level

There are many things that could be considered uneven. If you have a small ridge, you may want to smooth that out so your toolbox can roll across easier. If you have a low spot you may want it filled because when it snows or you wash your car you don’t want water collecting in one spot. Maybe your floor just looks rough and doesn’t have the best shape to it.

Each of these will require something different. You should look at what you are trying to accomplish with your floor before deciding on how to add material to your floor. Maybe you just want to keep water from pooling in one spot. Perhaps you want to have an even transition into your home or shop.

You may only need to fix a couple square feet of your floor. That can help when you’re on a budget.

Smooth Out Your High Spots

Let’s say your floor has a ridge going through the middle of your garage. You can add material to your floor to meet that height. But you would be adding much more material than necessary. And possibly raising your floor height where you enter your home or at your garage door.

You could grind your floor where it’s high if your concrete is good. Grinding your floor can help even out that height difference and make your transition less noticeable. Custom Concrete Prep & Polish recommends grinding where you have high spots in your floor to save on the cost of adding material to your floor.

There are some things that grinding your floor will not do. It will not fill any low spots and it will not help if your slab is still settling. You want to use this when you know that your concrete is good and just need to take off a little.

Fill In Low Spots

If you have low spots in your garage floor you can add material to your floor after it’s been cleaned and prepped. There are many products out there that can be used to fill in low spots. Just make sure they will work with what your floor will be used for. Some concrete patches can be used to drive on with your rubber tires and you can slope them to help with your transition.

Make sure you budget for prep work. Adding material to a dirty floor or over a failing coating will cause that patch to fail sooner. You’ll have to fix it again and it may end up costing you more in the long run.

If you have multiple low spots you may want to look at other options to repair your floor.

Leave Your Floor Slope Alone

Maybe your garage slopes towards your door or drain. If you try to make your floor completely flat you may have water problems.

When looking for products that can level your floor, know what you’re getting. Not all products are made for the same application. Some leveling compounds are meant to be used under other flooring materials.

If your water currently flows to a certain location on your floor maybe you want to keep that slope. You can always smooth out certain areas to store things or have an easier transition.

Understand When Your Floor Needs More Than A Patch Job

As you can see there are many ways to level your garage floor. If your floor is settling or has a ton of cracks running through it you may want to look into tearing out your slab and pouring a new one. Tearing out your garage floor can be very expensive. Custom Concrete Prep & Polish recommends repairing your floor if it’s in good condition. But if you have major issues with your floor you may want to replace it.

Coating your floor can also give your garage a fresh look and make it easier to clean. But if you have a dip in your floor the coating will show that dip. You’ll have to fix the dip to get rid of it.

So what’s the cheapest way to level your garage floor? There are many ways to repair your garage floor on a budget. By fixing only the areas that need attention you can keep costs lower.
